Phantom 3500 And Other Major Program Elements Coming Together Otto Aerospace continues to move forward with the continued development of their laminar flow Phantom 3500 aircraft. However, to allow that to happen, the company needs to have a manufacturing facility and given the timelines involved, they need to also continue working on the Phantom 3500 and bring it to a state for certification. For now, the Phantom 3500 or 800 Project as it is known as internally passed its Preliminary Design Review (PDR).
Otto Aerospace said that the first test aircraft dubbed FTV1 is expected to make its first flight by late 2027. Otto Aerospace plans to begin construction of its Phantom 3500 manufacturing facility at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2028 and start aircraft production around 2030. Additionally, the city issued a $12.1 million permit to allow the renovation of an existing 59,000-square-foot hangar at Cecil Airport for continued research and development work.
The company is preparing to make its move over to Jacksonville, Florida where it will build out its office, manufacturing/production facilities. Over 600,000 square feet of aforementioned space has to be built out by Otto Aerospace. 2030 is not far away which makes the moves that Otto Aerospace is making currently are necessary.
Otto Aerospace is betting big on the clean aerodynamics of this design. The Phantom 3500 is being developed as a business jet using a laminar-flow airframe designed to reduce drag. Otto Aerospace used the Celera 500L as a proof of concept for the laminar flow idea. That aircraft showcased a 59% lower drag compared to other similarly-sized aircraft.
